Biltmore RV Park Established 1958

Biltmore RV Park was built in 1958 by Mr. and Mrs. William Hiers (Bill and Norma).

After serving in the merchant marines during WWII and traveling the world, Bill wanted to show his new bride our beautiful country. So they bought a trailer and started out for their first adventure to California.

Traveling back east, moving from state to state, it was hard sometimes finding parks. So when they decided to settle down they began looking for a spot to build a small park.

Bill knew he wanted Savannah because his family roots were here and he loved this beautiful historic city. Norma on the other hand was from Portsmouth Virginia but had worked in Savannah as a nurse before marrying Bill. She joined the Nurses Cadet Corps in September of 1943 to start her 3 year nurses training. During WWII our country was desperately in need of nurses and had started the corps offering to pay for training, only stipulation was to remain a nurse through out the war. In 1951 working for the United States Public Health Service she was sent to Savannah to work at the old U S Marine Hospital.

The spot they choose was on US Hwy 17 the only route going from north to south. That was before the interstate system. It was a perfect spot for travelers, a quick stop along their journey to Florida for a visit. The 5 acre site was wooded except for a small house and a school for the deaf. The surrounding land was rural except for the occasional tourist motor lodge. Bill and only one other man (Theodore) cleared the property by hand building one site at a time. This was all done after a hard days work on the Seaboard Railroad.

The park was designed so that the sites had plenty of room and left many of the beautiful old oak trees. He planted a hundred azaleas after a local doctor offered free plants if citizens would only plant them to beautify the city. Many are still living in the park ,but if you drive thru the city in March you will see the beautiful result. When they are all in bloom it’s a sight to see. Later on a show room was constructed to sell Airstream trailers along with several other brands. Now it is our office with a small antique store.

Today the city has grown so that the park is really in the city. We are the closest RV park to the historic district of Savannah, only 5.5 miles just minutes away. We are still family owned after 67 years and prefer doing business the old fashioned way.

Reservations are only taken over the phone so you will always talk to a person. Call us during office hours (M-F 11-4 Sat 11-3) that’s the quickest way to make a reservation or have your questions answered. We love sharing our beautiful historic city with our guest.
